The general reason is nominated by Congress and appointed by the President, usually by the leader of the largest party or the leader of the coalition government. The current Prime Minister is Leo Varadkar, the leader of the Irish Unity Party who took office in 2017. Ireland is also a member of international organizations such as the European Union, the Council of Europe, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the World Trade Organization and the United Nations.

If the family doctor thinks that the patient needs to go to the hospital for treatment, the patient can use this medical card or the family doctor visit card to go to the public hospital for free treatment. Cardholders also enjoy free community services, dental services, approved prescription drug costs, hospital care, and a range of other benefits.
