Europe and the United States harvest the assets of Russian oligarchs. Are your overseas assets safe?

The European Union has imposed asset freeze measures on 26 Russian oil, banking and financial tycoons since February 28.

On the same day, the Swiss Federal Council held a special meeting and decided to join the EU and freeze the assets of relevant Russian individuals and institutions in Switzerland.

On March 1, US President Joe Biden said in his State of the Union address that "yachts, luxury apartments and private jets" of Russian oligarchs would be confiscated.

On March 3, the United States announced that it would freeze the assets of eight Russian billionaires in the United States. The U.S. Treasury Department's announcement also added pictures showing the luxury yachts and private jets of Russian mining giant Usmanov, two of which were seized by Germany and France before the U.S. announced the freeze.

On the same day, the United Kingdom announced on the 3rd that it would freeze the assets of two Russian billionaires in the United Kingdom. Britain has placed 195 Russians on a "sanctions list".

On March 4, British Deputy Prime Minister Raab said that the United Kingdom was considering confiscating the properties of Russian "oligarchs" to resettle Ukrainian refugees.

The West, led by the United States, has always believed that "private assets are sacred and inviolable", so why is it "double-standard" against the Russians now?

As ordinary people, when we do asset allocation and investment overseas, will we also encounter personal assets confiscated?

From the sanctioned list, we can see that these people whose assets were confiscated by the West belong to Russian oligarchs.

According to data on state exchange of information disclosed by the Russian Federal Tax Service, 400,000 Russian taxpayers hold about 700,000 overseas accounts.

Even in today's situation where Russia is under comprehensive sanctions, these 400,000 Russians have good overseas accounts. It can be seen that this wave of confiscation of private assets is only aimed at a few specific people.

For us ordinary people, how important it is to have a second identity as a guarantee. Regarding identity planning, planning ahead is always better than cramming!
